NW Calgary Dental Hygiene

Your Northwest Calgary Choice for Dental Hygiene and Teeth Cleanings!

Dr. Paul Hul with Patient | Point McKay Dental | General & Family Dentist | NW Calgary

Healthy teeth and gums are the cornerstone of a healthy mouth and a beautiful smile. That is why Point McKay Dental is pleased to offer dental hygiene appointments to help you achieve optimal oral health. While regular home maintenance is important to overall oral hygiene, it only focuses on areas of the teeth above the gumline (called scaling). A professional cleaning can not only clean teeth above the gumline, but also below the gumline as well (called root planning). It is only through scaling AND root planing that tartar, plaque, and bacteria can properly be removed from difficult to reach places below the gumline that home care cannot reach.

When you visit Point McKay Dental for your Dental Hygiene appointment, our team of dental hygienists will clean your teeth above the gum line, which is known as scaling, and below the gum line using a technique called root planing. We use traditional hand scalers and our ultrasonic scaling tools to remove calcium deposits, called calculus, from your teeth.

What Happens at a Dental Hygiene and Teeth Cleaning Appointment?

Dental Hygiene | Point McKay Dental | General & Family Dentist | NW Calgary
  • A comprehensive periodontal assessment, checking for gum recession, the presence of gingivitis and possible gum disease
  • Scaling and root planing – the process of deep cleaning to remove tartar (calculus), plaque, and bacteria from teeth above and below the gumline, so your gums and bone that make up the foundation of your teeth remain healthy and disease free.
  • Polishing your teeth to remove hard to remove surface stains
  • Fluoride treatment (if desired), which strengthens the enamel in areas that may be weak
  • An extra-oral exam at least once a year to check the head, neck and jaw areas for abnormalities
  • An oral cancer screening that checks the gum tissues, tongue, and lips for signs of oral cancer
  • Take diagnostic digital x-rays [when needed]
  • Sealants (if chosen), which are protective coatings that are applied on deep grooves of back teeth in order to prevent cavity formation in the future.
  • Your Dental Hygiene Therapy also includes an examination by Dr. Paul Hul to evaluate the current health of your teeth, gums, and the surrounding tissue.

How Often Should I Have a Dental Hygiene Visit?

Dental Hygiene | Point McKay Dental | General & Family Dentist | NW Calgary

Your hygiene therapy needs depend on several factors. If your teeth are more susceptible to the accumulation of plaque and calculus, if you have crowded teeth, or if you have advanced gum disease, the frequency of your visits may not match the other members of your family. The Point McKay Dental team evaluates every patient on an individual basis to determine the dental hygiene schedule that will best meet their specific needs. Most patients visit Point McKay Dental for their dental hygiene appointment every 6 months, but some people may benefit from a hygiene visit every 3-4 months. Others may only require a hygiene appointment every 9 to 12 months. The dental hygienists at Point McKay Dental will advise you on how often you should visit our practice to maintain your oral health and wellness.
